"Bright Futures Start Here"

From Jake Lundahl  —  Newbury, OH

👋🏼  Hey there,

The fact that you’re reading this tells me something about you.

You’re not just looking for any colt starter. You’re looking for the right colt starter. Someone you can trust with the horse you’ve invested your hopes, dreams, and hard-earned money into.

So I want to share something with you.

When you’ve been in this business awhile and started as many colts as I have, you learn a few things. I figured out long ago that, for as good as I might be with a horse, it’s even more important to understand the human beside or on top of them.

And here’s the secret I’ve discovered:

Every single horse owner who brings me a two-year-old reiner, cowhorse, or ranch prospect is looking for ONE thing above all else.

Training?

Sure, that's part of it.

But the real reason is something deeper than training...

Knowing.

Knowing your horse is safe and sound, physically and mentally.

Knowing your horse is on track and making progress.

Knowing there’s a plan; a proven process your trainer is following to deliver consistent and predictable results.

You want to be inside the decision curve so you know what's happening every step of the way.

Knowledge = Power = Peace Of Mind

At Lundahl Performance, we get it. That's why we’ve built our colt starting program to give owners that foundation of certainty. It consists of two pillars:

  • Transparency in Communication – You’re never in the dark about what’s happening with your horse.

  • A Defined Training Process – Every step your colt takes is mapped out with clear, objective milestones and measurable progress.

Here’s how these pillars set us apart and why they matter for you and your horse:

Know What's Happening and Why

We understand how much trust it takes to hand your horse over to a trainer. That’s why we make transparency a priority—not just in what we do, but in how we communicate with you.

Here’s what to expect from us:

  • Regular Updates: You’ll receive detailed progress reports, video clips, and photos so you can see exactly how your horse is advancing.

  • Personalized Feedback: We’ll explain what your horse is learning, why it matters, and how it ties into your goals.

  • Open Dialogue: Whether it’s emails, Zoom calls, or in-person visits, we encourage you to ask questions and stay involved. Get hands-on with your horse during real training sessions, or just smile and beam with pride as you watch them advance. It’s totally up to you.

Transparency isn’t just about keeping you informed—it’s about earning your confidence. When you know what’s happening and why, you can trust that your horse is in good hands.

A Complete Roadmap to Excellence

When it comes to colt starting, a solid plan is non-negotiable. The first 90 days are critical. There’s no room for guesswork.

Our entire training program is defined and mapped, step-by-step with no steps skipped. It's a clear pathway from foundation to finesse. A structured, repeatable system tailored to suit your horse’s needs.

We effortlessly walk you through it and explain every step, because we know it backwards and forwards.

Our process ensures that:

  • Every skill your horse learns builds on the last.

  • Your colt is progressing at a pace that respects their mental and physical readiness.

  • Nothing important is overlooked or rushed.

We're not just riding around "putting time on" your horse. We have an actual program. Here’s a brief overview of what that looks like:

The Ultimate Foundation Blueprint

Groundwork Fundamentals

  • Groundwork is where we begin building a language with your horse that soon translates to the saddle. We nurture habits of calmness, confidence, curiosity and responsiveness in your colt from day one.

Tying, Hobbling, Trailer, Farrier, etc.

  • We make sure to cover the "horsemanship" stuff that trainers often neglect. Especially in situations where their movement is restricted, it's important that your colt knows how to stay calm and composed.

First Saddling

  • We methodically prepare your horse ensure this is a confidence-building experience; promoting good saddling habits and preparing for our first rides without fear.

First Rides in the Roundpen

  • These first rides follow a purposeful sequence, choreographed between the rider and the helper on the ground. This builds massive confidence in the colt and establishes key skills with ZERO drama.

  • We create a first experience under saddle that your horse will carry positively for the rest of their life—safe, calm, smooth and controlled.

Walk/Trot/Lope on a Loose Rein Outside

  • Your colt learns to move out freely and responsively (in the big arena and outdoors) at all three gaits; establishing a balanced, relaxed rhythm that builds confidence and prepares them for future advanced work.

Impulsion, Steering & Guiding Exercises

  • Essential elements for a horse that is willingly guided and responds to the rider's legs. Your colt learns to follow their nose and perform simple patterns while maintaining consistent forward motion.

Suppling, Yielding & Transitions Exercises

  • Create habits of softness and body control, the keys to teaching advanced maneuvers more easily. Your colt learns to bend, yield, back up, and shape their body in simple ways that gradually complexify over time.

  • They also learn to navigate changes in speed, gait, and direction with softness, smoothness and composure—opening the door to more dynamic, refined movements and balance.

Skills That Scale "The Turning Point" and "The Big 3"

  • A special, ultra-specific sequence of exercises that we take your horse through once they're proven ready. Most horses start this sequence around the 6-week mark of training, and it takes another 4-6 weeks to complete.

  • These exercises turn the building blocks we established earlier into the baby versions of real maneuvers:

    • Collected lead departures

    • Neck reining

    • Sliding stops

    • Spins

    • Rollbacks

    • and more...

By this stage of training (~90 days) your horse's foundation is complete. We've moved on to forging the connection between the basics and the advanced maneuvers they will execute as they mature.

Here is where the training gets really fun and exciting. We're not just working on "building blocks" anymore. These skills are fully formed tools that scale seamlessly as your horse progresses into more refined work.

The Skills That Scale sequence is something special and unique to us that no other colt starter in the world can give you. I'm happy to share more details on our discovery call:

Because "Good Enough" Doesn't Cut It

The first 90 days of training are everything. They set the tone, the habits, and the mindset your horse will carry for the rest of their life. When you bring your colt to Lundahl Performance, you’re not just investing in training—you’re investing in their future, your safety, and the kind of partnership that makes every ride feel like a privilege.

That's a responsibility we take very seriously. We don’t cut corners. We don’t skip steps. We don’t leave anything up to chance. Because we know what’s at stake. We know how much trust you’re putting in us—not just in our training program but in our ability to see the greatness in your horse and bring it to the surface.

So this is my promise to you:

When your colt graduates our program, they’re more than just “green broke.” They’re prepared — mentally, physically, and emotionally — to work and win.

They know how to handle pressure without panic. They move and guide with balance, rhythm, willingness, and a quiet confidence that only comes from a process done right.

And most importantly, they know how to work with you—not just tolerate you.

If you choose to leave our program after the first 90 days are complete, you'll leave with a horse that’s ready for the next step. You’ll also take something with you that's just as valuable: a deep understanding of the training process, the tools to continue building your colt’s potential, and the confidence to trust yourself and your horse.

This Is Where Greatness Begins

Your colt’s future starts with the decisions you make today. Don’t leave it to chance. Don’t settle for anything less than great.
